Coupang Global Selling Marketplace for China

Coupang is a South Korean e-commerce company founded in 2010 by Bom Kim. Based in Seoul and incorporated in Delaware, Coupang has become the largest online marketplace in South Korea, with a reputation for being the “Amazon of South Korea”. The company has expanded its offerings to include video streaming distribution with the launch of Coupang Play.

Challenge

Coupang planned to develop a website that offers a comprehensive platform for businesses and sellers to easily sell their products to consumers in China. As a marketplace, it aims to help businesses reach Chinese customers and expand their reach in the market by leveraging Coupang’s established logistics and distribution network. Additionally, the site serves as a guide for new users by providing information on market trends, local regulations, and logistics, as well as offering the latest news and updates, and promoting the Coupang brand. The goal is to simplify the process of selling to China and provide a one-stop solution for businesses looking to grow their presence in the market.

Ideate

Brainstorm and generate a range of ideas and potential solutions to meet the needs of businesses and sellers. The team will look at what other marketplaces are offering, what challenges businesses and sellers face when selling to China, and what opportunities exist for simplifying the process.

Wireframe and Prototype

I created low-fidelity prototypes to test design solutions with users. These prototypes tested different elements such as layout, navigation, and features to gather feedback and make informed decisions. This helped ensure the final design met user needs and expectations.

When it comes to typography, the Coupang China website makes use of Microsoft Yahei as its main font. This choice was made due to customer requirements and the goal of meeting their needs. Microsoft Yahei is a popular font choice for its readability and legibility, making it easy for users to access and read the content on the website.

In terms of color, the Coupang China website makes use of the company’s branding color theme. This color palette was carefully selected to reinforce the Coupang brand identity and elevate the overall user experience for visitors. The use of color also helps to establish a visual hierarchy on the site, making it easier for users to navigate and find the information they need. The combination of typography and color helps to create a clear and accessible user experience for all visitors, helping to achieve the goal of simplifying the process of selling to China.

User test

User testing was conducted to validate the design assumptions made during ideation and prototyping. I gathered feedback on the prototypes from internal team members, the client, and other stakeholders, and used it to refine and enhance the design. This helped ensure that the final product met the needs and expectations of all users.

Iterate

Based on the user feedback, I refined and improved the design. The process of ideating, prototyping, testing, and iterating was repeated until the solution met the needs of the users and provided value.

Launch

Once the design is validated, launch the MVP (minimum viable product) and continue to collect user feedback to drive future improvements. The goal is to launch a platform that provides a comprehensive solution for businesses and sellers looking to learn and sell their products from Korea to consumers in China.

Key Takeaways

From this project, I learn to :

  1. Clearly defined problem: By articulating the problem of providing a platform for businesses and sellers to easily sell their products to consumers in China, the focus is on meeting the needs and motivations of the target users.
  2. Ideation and prototyping: Through ideation and prototyping, a range of ideas and potential solutions are generated and tested to validate assumptions and gather feedback.
  3. User testing: User testing is an important part of the process, as it allows for validation of the design and gathers feedback to refine and improve the solution.
  4. Iterative design process: The process of ideating, prototyping, testing, and iterating continues until the solution meets the needs of the users and provides value.
  5. User-centered solution: The goal is to launch a platform that provides a comprehensive and user-centered solution for businesses and sellers looking to sell their products to consumers in China.
  6. Continuous improvement: The platform will continue to evolve and improve through ongoing user feedback and iteration.
